THE CRICKET COLLECTION
As an artist I have never been comfortable with hard projectiles coming toward me. I prefer to sit beside a tree for 3 hours and watch its graceful movements. Cricket would make me flinch in terror. Even cricket players would taunt me, with their fast quips and sledging, leaving me dumbfounded for a response. As a young Australian, this game seemed to hold a dreaded place in what I feared I would have to face in the future, like heading off to a battle somewhere. Fortunately I escaped both cricket and war, yet through my pencil, ink and sketch pad, I have a developed a distanced affection for this vicious but ever so elegant game of excellence.

Heading out to bat, 2016
This would have been the perfect photo but the memory in my phone was full- then I remembered I had a pencil and some paper!
Oscar Dominguez heading out to bat for Hunters Hill Pirates last Saturday at Morrison Park, Putney.
He loves his cricket, though his strength has always been as a bowler rather than batting. Moments before he had looked up to me with a worried brow to see the previous batter run out- his impending fate at hand. They say you can't be brave without being scared. I have to admit I never had the courage (or coordination) to face up to a cricket ball. What a top fella.
